James Blount
June 5, 1943 - September 28, 2023
James “Jim” Blount, co-publisher of about...time, a magazine dedicated to Rochester’s Black community, died Thursday at age 80. Alongside his wife Carolyne, Blount spent decades spotlighting positive stories often overlooked by mainstream media. After moving to Rochester in 1970 and working at IBM, the couple took over the fledgling publication in 1972 and built it into a trusted voice for authentic conversations and community celebration. Despite early skepticism from advertisers, about...time marked its 50th anniversary last year and continues to publish quarterly. Blount believed deeply in amplifying the achievements and history of Black Rochesterians, saying, “There are more good stories… that have gone unreported for a long, long time.”
